As well as participating in and helping orchestrate events as speaker, summariser and content creator (see Speaking), Charles Landry works in three other ways:

In addition he commits to a significant amount of work which would be classed as internal Research and Development. He explains this work as follows:
Every few years with my colleagues we try to invent research and development projects to explore issues we feel are important. These come off when we are able to persuade others, usually foundations, cities or regional governments, to contribute financially in the subject. The Creative City concept itself was one of these and was developed in the early 1990's with the help of the Anglo-German Foundation when we brought together 5 German and 5 British cities to explore the theme. Here we collaborated with Klaus Kunzmann and StadtArt from Dortmund.
Most recently we completed The Intercultural City - see www.interculturalcity.com. This explores whether diversity leads to well-being and innovation in cities. Historically this was often the case. Is it still true today in an age of mass mobility? And if so how? The project also challenges some ideas around multiculturalism, which rightly acknowledges and celebrates the differences between people. The intercultural theme by contrast asks the question: We live here together in one place, what can we do together?
Our current R&D theme is called The Creative Bureaucracy - see www.creativebureaucracy.com and separate page on this website. Another we are developing is called Can Artists help make Great Places?.
In the past we explored projects such as: City Centres at Night, the Future of Libraries, the Richness of Cities; Cemeteries in the City, Urban Parks, the Social Impact of the Arts, Culture and Urban Regeneration.
